What is this bug called?!?

I've seen this creepy bug twice, one in my friend's backyard and once in a flowerpot in my front yard: it looks like a yellow, hairy, fat spider with big eyes and wings. It's not a crane fly, those are skinny. It's really ugly, like a cross between a bee and a spider, my worst fear :P Just curious... do you know what it's called?
