What if America had not dropped the atomic bomb on Japan at the end of WW2?

we would have to lose more lives, because the Japanese said they will fight to the death , Atomic bomb was the only way to end the war with minimum lives casualities of American soldiers because a full scale invasion of Japans is suicidal
