Can I use the screen of my laptop with my ps3?

Can I use the screen of my laptop not with the computer but just as another monitor which I could connect my ps3? I have already manged to get it to work in my dell monitor of my desktop but when I connect it to my laptop it just does that sound that it does when something connects and then the screen resolution changes, I connected it through an avg cable which I then connected to a signal converter which then I connected my ps3 to the signal converter as well.I have an inspiron 1525.
